Psalm 1 (Listen)

1:1   Blessed is the man
    who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
  nor stands in the way of sinners,
    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
  but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
    and on his law he meditates day and night.
  He is like a tree
    planted by streams of water
  that yields its fruit in its season,
    and its leaf does not wither.
  In all that he does, he prospers.
  The wicked are not so,
    but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
  Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
  for the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked will perish.

Devotional:

But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night (Psalm 1:2 CSB).

What do you delight in? We can take delight in many things, from a well-executed play on the football field to a well-planned party. Psalm 1 tells us that the righteous person does not delight in the advice of the wicked, in the pathway of sinners, or in sitting with scoffers. Instead, he or she delights in God’s Word and meditates on that word day and night. Delight in skill on the athletic field or a wonderful event is short-lived, but when you spend time with the Lord, when His Word is planted in you, the living water of Christ will flow into your life and prepare you to stand strong in the changes and challenges of life. Today take delight in God’s Word by picking one of your favorite verses from the Bible and memorizing it.

Pray it: Father, thank you for the gift of your Word. Help me to delight in it more by listening to it and placing it above the voices and thoughts of others – including my very own. Watch over my way and lead me in righteous paths. Amen.
