Psalm 54 (Listen)

54:1   O God, save me by your name,
    and vindicate me by your might.
  O God, hear my prayer;
    give ear to the words of my mouth.
  For strangers have risen against me;
    ruthless men seek my life;
    they do not set God before themselves. Selah
  Behold, God is my helper;
    the Lord is the upholder of my life.
  He will return the evil to my enemies;
    in your faithfulness put an end to them.
  With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you;
    I will give thanks to your name, O LORD, for it is good.
  For he has delivered me from every trouble,
    and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies.

Devotional:

God is my helper; the Lord is the sustainer of my life (Psalm 54:4 CSB).

David wrote this Psalm when everything seemed hopeless. He was betrayed and likely scared of what would happen next. But David didn’t panic. Instead, he turned to God because he recognized that God was not just his only chance for survival, but the very sustainer of his life. Isn’t it funny how fear and hopelessness cause us to cry out to God? When we’re out of options, we realize that God is really the only option that matters. The next time fear gets a hold of you, let it push you into the peace of God, because when we hide our lives in Him, we have nothing to fear.

Pray it: Father, I thank you for the troubles you have delivered me from and those you have protected me from. Help me remember that you are my helper and sustainer and to trust in you no matter what my eyes might see and my heart might fear. Amen.
